Texas Tech University Geosciences Department

GIS & Remote Sensing Facility

1. Computer Classroom

The room is equipped with 24 Windows XP Pro workstations and a multi-media presentation system.  The computers in the room are link to the central SAN (storage area network) of the university where data are backed up daily.  Software available for course work includes ArcGIS Desktop (ESRI), PCI Geomatica (PCI Geomatics), ER Mapper (Earth Resources Mapping), Geographix (Landmark Graphics), and MATLAB (Mathworks).

2. GIS research lab

The facility is used primarily by students and faculty members whose research involve use of GIS and remote sensing technologies.    It is equipped with 8 Windows XP Pro workstations and 2 Windows 2003 servers.  Large-format map scanners and large-format printers are also available.   In addition to the software mentioned above, GoCAD (Earth Decision Science), Cyclone (Leica Geosystems), and BasinMod (Platte River Associates) packages are available.

3. Remote Sensing Lab

The facility is used by primarily by students and faculty members whose research involve use of remote sensing data processing and image interpretation.  In addition to the software mentioned above, ENVI (Research Systems, Inc.) is available.  A Fieldspec Pro Jr. spectroradiometer is available.

4. Three-dimensional laser scanners

The university has two units of 3-D laser scanners (HDS2500 and HDS3000 of Leica Geosystems).  They are maintained by the College of Architecture and can be made available to the university's GIS and remote sensing communitiy.
